Gayatri Mantra

The Gayatri Mantra meaning ‘Mantra for the Spiritual Light,’ is one of the oldest, most powerful and well-known mantras in the world.  Chanting (either verbally or silently, although silent is most recommended) of this mantra should be done 3, 9, 18 or 108 times.  This sacred verse has the ability to heal ailments, overcome obstacles, create inner peace, enhance well-being, increase wisdom and spiritual growth. It activates all 7 energy centers or ‘Chakras,’ within the body and invokes a calm, peaceful state of being. Intentions are for the Good of All Beings.

There are various translations for the Gayatri Mantra. Each Sanskrit word has several English translations from which you can gain your own wisdom.

OM/AUM = Universal sound for the Divine, BHUR= Earth/Physical/Existance/ Life/Prana, BHUVAH= Water/Astral Plane, SWAHA = Bliss/Celestial Plane/Nature of the Divine, (THE FIRST 3 WORDS EXPRESS THE NATURE OF THE DIVINE)  TAT= that Transcending of Consciousness/Selflessness, SAVITUR= another name for God/Creator/Divine/Ishwara, VARENYAM= best/devote/accept, (THE SECOND VERSE EXPRESSES DEVOTION TO FAITH, TO THE DIVINE, TO ACCEPTANCE)  BHARGO = Glorious light that removes all darkness/sin/ignorance, DEVASYA = qualities of the Divine/Luminous, DHIMAHI = meditation on unity with All, (THE THIRD VERSE EXPRESSES ATTRIBUTES OF DIVINE NATURE)                      DHIYO= Wisdom, YO = which/who, NAH = our/humanity (the good of all), PRACHODAYAT = Enlighten/Guide (THE FINAL PRAYER OF UNITY WITH ALL)
